
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 80

Requesting the West Virginia Division of Highways to name the twin
bridges located on Interstate 79 and crossing the Tygart
Valley River at mile post 132½ be named the "Prunty Bridges"
and to designate the northbound bridge to honor and recognize
the public service and everlasting contributions of Paul E.
Prunty, the "Paul E. Prunty Bridge."

Whereas, Paul E. Prunty has been elected to the House of
Delegates eleven times by the people of Marion County, which is the
longest period of service in the House by any delegate elected from
Marion County; and

Whereas, Only eleven other delegates in State history have
served in the House of Delegates as long as Paul Prunty; and

Whereas, During Paul Prunty's twenty-two years of service in
the House of Delegates, he has the distinction of serving both as
a democrat, eight years, and as a republican, fourteen years; and

Whereas, He is the only Delegate in the history of West
Virginia who has been elected to the House by way of an election contest and
a vote by the House of Delegates; and

Whereas, Paul E. Prunty has been a dedicated public servant who
has worked hard to improve the quality of life for the people of
Marion County and the State of West Virginia
; and

Whereas, Paul Prunty, as a blue collar factory worker for forty
years, has been a voice for the working people of West Virginia for
three decades; and

Whereas, He has demonstrated his deeply held convictions and
beliefs in God and country and that a strong family is the backbone
of our country's strength; and

Whereas, Paul Prunty is the fourth generation of Pruntys who
have served in the West Virginia and Virginia Legislatures and his
great uncle, Ephraim Franklin Morgan, was the Governor of West
Virginia from 1920 to 1924; and

Whereas, As a graduate of East Fairmont High School, he
attended Fairmont State College and served in the United States
Army Reserves, attaining the rank of staff sergeant; and

Whereas, Paul Prunty has served on numerous boards and
commissions, both locally and state-wide, and was appointed as a
member of the "West Virginia Labor-Management Relations Board"
where he served for five years; and

Whereas, Paul E. Prunty has, with the help of his loving wife,
Barbara, and his family, truly represented the best interests of
Marion countians with honesty and integrity for twenty-two years;
therefore, be it

Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

That the twin bridges located on Interstate 79 and crossing
the Tygart Valley River at mile post 132½ be named the "Prunty
Bridges" and that the southbound bridge be designated to recognize
the public service and everlasting contributions of Paul E. Prunty;
and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House is hereby
requested to forward a copy of this resolution to the West Virginia
State Division of Highways.
